READY TO RIDE
CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
Welcome to chapter forty-eight of our ‘Ready To Ride’ short stories series.
These are five quick snapshots of what we do, where we ride, the laughs had, and the general shenanigans and goings-on, while riding together over the Himalayas & through South India.
I’m posting these every Friday, and they’re an easy read; a few minutes are all you need.
Enjoy!
Alex Pirie
Founder & Lead Rider

“I first met and rode with Alex way back in 2007 on a crazy life-affirming ride in the Himalayas.
The riding, the mountains, the people, and the adventure literally changed how I think, approach and experience life, and I carry that with me to this day.
And the only reason I found myself on a 500cc Bullet at 18,000ft was because I said YES to a friend’s suggestion that we pack our bags and head off to India (Thanks, Will).
Without that one YES, I would not have been on so many amazing, crazy, out there adventures with Alex and the Nomadic Knights team.
This is me celebrating with a cold one in Kathmandu just after we all finished the Rode to Everest.
If you’re thinking about it… just say YES.” – Iain.
The man. The myth. The legend.
And the man behind the majority of our photography.
It’s amazing how one word can change the course of your life – had Iain not said yes, we might never have crossed paths or shared some incredible adventures together.

An adventure of a lifetime demands a well-maintained motorcycle fleet…
We don’t rent, we own them all.
We replace our fleet constantly, and each motorcycle is fully serviced before every ride. During the adventure, each motorcycle is washed and checked over at the end of every day.
Any necessary tweaks or repairs are made and inspected once again in the morning. Our support team are constantly on hand to help with any repairs throughout the ride also.
I’m a mechanic by trade, so nothing gets past me.
That means you won’t find any of our motorcycles with bald tyres, bad brakes, or bashed fuel tanks.
Safety is our first concern.
We don’t repair inner tubes, we fit new ones.
If your horn’s starting to fail, it’s replaced.
No expense is spared.
We don’t compromise safety.

There’s no hard sell at Nomadic Knights…
There’s no need.
The simple and practical truth is that these rides are popular and often sell out suddenly – especially when groups of friends book together.
It may come as no surprise that the Rode To Everest ride is our most popular adventure and always sells out early.
This is an epic, sensory ride across the Roof of the World to one of the most unbelievable places on the planet.
The trip of a lifetime.
If the idea of the Rode To Everest adventure excites you, don’t wait too long!
We operate on a strictly first-come, first-served basis.

Who knew a tasty potato treat would bring so much joy?
One of the great things about exploring anywhere is getting a taste (quite literally) of local life.
You might try things you’d never have imagined in a million years, and you might even find some tasty treats that remind you of home.
Either way, food is a great connector and conversation starter.
You might chat with the vendors, discovering the story behind the local delicacies, and the tales between riders might begin once more.
When you’re travelling off the beaten track like us, you uncover new worlds of wonder that take you by surprise for all the right reasons.
These are the moments that stay with you.

Why acting your age can be problematic…
The older we become, the more inclined we might feel to stop doing the things we enjoy, out of concern or fear that we’re “too old”.
But who decides when we’re too old?
Just because you’ve reached a certain age doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying the things you love.
Believe it or not, we don’t have to resign ourselves to a beige coat, slippers and a crossword for the rest of our lives.
Shutting yourself off from opportunities carries real risk.
Once that narrative starts, it can be hard to escape.
You begin acting your age when you don’t have to.
So don’t let the old person in.
If you can still do it, do it.
Enjoy the ride.
I’ll see you on the next one.
JOIN THE
KNIGHT CLUB
So you’re considering taking on a real adventure? I remember the feeling. In 2006, I was sat right where you are now… wondering if it was for me.
Join our mailing list – The Knight Club – and I’ll send my no-BS thoughts on why you should (or shouldn’t) take it on. No sales. No special offers. These rides aren’t for everyone, but if you’re the right kind of person, it can remind you what it means to be alive.
All the best, Alex.
