About: Girls on Top – Everest Base Camp with Steph Jeavons

Steph Jeavons likes to do things differently and is a legitimate pioneer when it comes to global biking. This is the first time ever that a group of female motorcyclists will ride to Mount Everest Base Camp with Steph leading the ride. Her credentials are unquestionable. Read Steph’s Blog here.

She is the first Brit to circumnavigate the globe and ride on all seven continents. She has spent the last four years riding her 250 cc motorcycle solo around the world and has ridden through an incredible 50 countries. She now wants to use her experience to encourage and motivate more women to take the initiative for motorcycle adventure. ‘You don’t need to be an expert to take on a challenge like this. When I left home I was terrified but sometimes you just have to go for it. That very act alone can be life changing’.

This ride is about working together as a team and sharing amazing experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. As long as you’re a woman, you are able to take part.

Sorry guys, women only on this one.

The ride isn’t exactly a ‘walk in the park’ but it’s not the Paris – Dakar either, it’s doable. If you want to take part and don’t have a full motorcycle licence, you can ride pillion or travel with the crew in one of our support trucks

It’s been long closed off and unreachable in its Himalayan vastness. Tibet, the Roof Of The World, has always been a mysterious land topping the wish list of motorcyclists worldwide.

Mystical and magical, Tibet is an overload on the senses. This is a country of extremes with one of the most adventurous, scenically stunning and exciting motorcycle adventures in the world. It’s an enlightening experience – spiritually, culturally and emotionally. The Tibetan Buddhist people are the most compassionate and gentle despite their years of inaccessibility, struggle and resilience.

We ride over 2,300 kms to Everest Base Camp, alongside glittering azure coloured lakes, over vast landscapes and snow capped peaks. There are remote high altitude deserts, densely forested precipitous gorges and virtually unpopulated high altitude moorlands. The ride takes us to to the end of its borders whilst taking in the fabled and ancient cities of Lhasa and Kathmandu.

The motorcycles we ride will be our Royal Enfield Himalayan’s which are perfect for the job, they were designed for exactly this. Nothing can truly prepare you for the moment when the absolute majesty of Mount Everest suddenly appears before you, it’s truly breathtaking, mind-blowing comes to mind.

It will be a moment in time that’s sticks with you forever as you watch the sun go down over her peak before bedding down for the night at Base Camp.

There is always much demand for this ride and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis so don’t miss this opportunity and book early for this epic and once in a lifetime motorcycle adventure.

Itinerary: Girls on Top – Everest Base Camp

SUN. DAY 1. ARRIVE KATHMANDU

Transfer you to your hotel where you can relax after your flight. We get together this evening at 6pm in the hotel reception to gather all our paperwork for our Tibet Group Permit application. We can also chat about what lies ahead and meet up with the other riders and team.

MON. DAY 2. SIGHTSEEING IN KATHMANDU

Our agent will apply for our Tibet Group Permit at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu today which should be delivered to us on Wednesday morning just before we set off. There is much to see and do in this busy and frantic city.

Whether you’re barrelling through the traffic-jammed alleyways of the old town in a rickshaw, marvelling at the medieval temples or dodging trekking touts in the backpacker district of Thamel, Kathmandu is an intoxicating, charming and exhausting place.

Take a stroll through the backstreets and Kathmandu’s timeless cultural and artistic heritage will reveal itself in hidden temples overflowing with marigolds, courtyards full of drying chillies and rice, and tiny hobbit-sized workshops.

This endlessly fascinating, sometimes infuriating city has enough sights to keep you busy for a week.

TUE. DAY 3. WARM UP RIDE (70 km)

We prepare for the long days to come by taking a short ride out around midday into the busy traffic and splended countryside up around the beautiful forested hill station of Nagarkot. We can grab some hot tea and local snacks while we’re up there. Today also gives you time to get acquainted with your Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle. It’s now yours for the duration of the ride.

WED. DAY 4. KATHMANDU – SYARUBESI – (130km)

Our Tibet Group Permits are now ready for collection. We ride out of Kathmandu for the beautiful and likely challenging route alongside the Trishuli River up towards the new Nepal/ Tibet border at Gyirong. We spend the night on the Nepal side of the border in amongst the rich and dense jungle area of Langtang National Park.

THU. DAY 5. SYABRUBESI – NEW TINGRI (367 km)

After completing our customs and immigration formalities we head on to New Tingri, this evening’s destination.

It’s a very early start and today is a long one. The roads are good and the views are incredible. We head up over our first high pass where we might be able to see Mount Everest if the weather is clear. We ride on a sweeping and starkly beautiful valley with many dips and crests before dropping down to New Tingri. If luck is on our side then we should arrive just before sunset.

FRI. DAY 6. NEW TINGRI – XIGAZE (230 km)

Todays ride is on good roads and we will be able to cruise in top gear as we take in the picturesque landscape whilst riding through Tibetan villages with snow capped mountain peaks in the distance as far as the eye can see. Keep you eye out for the fibreglass policemen – some holding radar guns, some waving, and some decorated by locals wearing silks scarves and prayer beads.

SAT. DAY 7. XIGAZE – LHASA (270 km)

This route bypasses Gyangtse and takes us along the main road from Xigaze to Lhasa via the winding Yarlung Zangbo river. We have a leisurely start as the riding is fairly straight forward and should arrive in Lhasa with time to explore a little and hit the town for a good meal and a few properly chilled beers.

SUN. DAY 8. LHASA (Rest day in Lhasa)

There’s a lot to see and do in Lhasa, one of the highest cities in the world at 3,650 metres. You can visit the famous Potala Palace which we arrange and is included within your package. Some say it’s the icon of Tibet and over the years it’s been home to 14 Dalai Lamas. You may also want to take a trip down to Barkhor Street, spend time at the Dreprung monastery or sample some of the many restaurants whilst chilling out with a cool beer.

MON. DAY 9. LHASA – XIGAZE via YAMDROK LAKE (360 km)

Today is a day of jaw dropping scenery as we ride alongside and past Yamdrok Tso turquoise lake. We take on two more 5000 metre plus passes, Karo-La and Kamba-La and ride over a huge glacier before arriving in Zigaze.

TUE. DAY 10. XIGAZE – NEW TINGRI (237 km)

Back in the saddle today we slowly gain in altitude before an abrupt rise and slow stark descent down into New Tingri. We won’t have a late one tonight as we get ready for the highlight of the adventure.

WED. DAY 11. NEW TINGRI- EVEREST BASE CAMP (107 km)

This is surely what you came for. Today we ride to Everest Base Camp, possibly one of the most famous places on the planet. We tackle a high pass over endless switchbacks with more than 117 curves before riding up a wide, dry valley to Rongbuk Monastery. We arrive in plenty of time to visit Everest Base Camp at an altitude of just over 17,000 feet. (5,200 metres) The highest mountain on this planet looms majestically just over your shoulder and we spend this evening taking photographs and watching the sun go down over her peak. I can assure you that these moments will stay etched in your memory forever. The next time you will be at this altitude, you’re likely to be on your flight home.

THU. DAY 12. EVEREST BASE CAMP – GYIRONG. (405 km)

We waken early for a final view of Base Camp and to watch the stunning sunrise over Mount Everest before riding back down towards the highway. We are now leaving the high altitude desert behind and riding back down to our final night’s stay in Tibet at Gyirong.

FRI. DAY 13. GYIRONG- KATHMANDU (164 km)

We ride out of Tibet and back to the warmth and hospitality of Nepal. An early border crossing should give us plenty of time for the journey back into the hectic city traffic of Kathmandu and hopefully for an early evening arrival. We have our farewell celebration, a few drinks or two, maybe more and reflect on the amazing motorcycle trip we have just completed.

SAT. DAY 14 DEPART KATHMANDU

Leave for airport.

How to get here: Girls on Top – Everest Base Camp

IMPORTANT: PLEASE PRINT THIS OUT AND CARRY IT WITH YOU.

HOW DO YOU GET HERE?

There are no international inbound direct flights into Kathmandu (Tribuvan Airport) as far as I know therefore all inbound flights fly in via various international airports from where you will connect to Kathmandu.

You need to arrive on the start day of the trip which is the 15.09.2019. We all need to meet at 6pm in the evening to complete our Tibet Permit paperwork so an early afternoon landing time would be ideal. If you wish to arrive earlier then please contact the hotel directly and mention that you are with the Nomadic Knights motorcycle tour.

As everyone is arriving on different flights from different countries at different times the easiest way for everyone to get to the starting point hotel is to jump a taxi from outside the airport. A taxi from the airport should only cost $10 as the hotel is only 6 kms from the airport and as always ask for the price first. Some of the taxi drivers might take US dollars however make sure your ATM card will work in Nepal so as you can draw local currency. The address of our starting point hotel is, Hotel Tibet International, Boudha, Kathmandu, Nepal. Tel: 00977-01-4488188 Fax: 00977-01-4487963 Email: info@hoteltibetintl.com.np

When you arrive at the hotel your room will be ready for you so please give your name and mention that you are with Nomadic Knights. A member of the team will be at the hotel when you arrive.

If there are any problems you can call or text Alex on his mobile: 0091 9623 048879. We end the ride in Kathmandu on the 27.09.2019 and leave the next day on the 28.09.2019. We will have vehicles available from the hotel in Kathmandu to take you back to the drop off point, which will be Kathmandu International Airport. The journey will take around 20 minutes If you do not wish to be dropped at Kathmandu airport please make your own arrangements with the driver as he will be only too happy to help.

Please make sure that you have checked in at least two hours prior to your flights, inward and outbound. For your flight arrangements I suggest that you try www.cleartrip.com or www.makemytrip.com These are very competitive travel websites selling flights in all currencies.

Have a great journey
